Modern Wealth Management has added its second large team from LPL Financial in a three-week span.
The company revealed on Wednesday that it has acquired Brown and Company, a $1bn practice in Denver which had been affiliated with LPL since its 1989 formation.
Specific financial terms of the transaction, which closed on Friday, were not disclosed. Earlier in April, Monterey, Calif.-based Modern Wealth added $1.2bn Legacy Wealth Management, an LPL affiliate in Plantation, Fla.
Modern Wealth, which is led by United Capital alumni Gary Roth, Mike Capelle and Jason Gordo, has become one of the most prolific acquirers in the independent wealth management industry in a short time. The deal with Brown and Company marks Modern Wealth’s 21st acquisition since its 2023 founding.
‘It is coming together very quickly. I’ve stated in the past the goal is $28bn by the end of 2028. This puts us at about $13bn of AUM,’ said Gordo (pictured), who serves as Modern Wealth’s president. ‘We have a pretty robust pipeline that’s near-to-mid funnel. We’re running well ahead of pace of that 28 in ‘28 objective and I don’t think any of us thought that we would be exactly where we are today.’
‘We thought we’d be close as our stretch goal, but I think we’ve exceeded everybody’s goals, objectives and business plans.’
Modern Wealth launched with a $200m funding commitment from private equity firm Crestview Partners, which gave the company the capital it needed to pursue acquisitions of both RIAs and breakaway teams alike.
The deal with Brown and Company brings eight new staffers into the fold at Modern Wealth, including Brown and Company founder Mark Brown, who will become a managing director at the company.
Brown originally teamed up with Peter Tedstrom in 1988 to form a practice affiliated with LPL predecessor company Linsco known as Brown & Tedstrom. The duo split up in 2018; Tedstrom sold his practice to RIA Merit Financial Advisors in 2022.

‘As we considered the future of the firm, it was important to find the right home for our team — one that would support a thoughtful succession plan, preserve the best elements of our firm and help us elevate our capabilities,’ Brown (pictured) stated.
Gordo told Citywire the transaction was arranged by Alaris Acquisitions, which is led by United Capital alum Allen Darby.
‘I think any independent broker-dealer team is picking their head up for the first time, maybe, and they’re looking around the industry and going, “why is there so much activity going on over here in the RIA space?,”’ Gordo said.
