Janney Snags Two Advisors With $760M in AUM

Janney Montgomery Scott has recruited Adam Runk and Greg Marco, both executive vice presidents for investments in Lancaster, Pa., according to the Philadelphia-based wealth manager and investment bank.

Runk and Marco joined from FNB Trust with client relationships representing more than $760 million in assets, and are joined by Account Executive Gizem Folk and Private Client Associate David Whiting.

“We were drawn to Janney’s boutique, advisor-first culture and collaborative mindset,” Runk and Marco said in a statement. “The firm gives advisors the flexibility to run their practice their way, along with the platform, resources and support needed to continue serving clients thoughtfully and delivering the long-term guidance they deserve.”

Runk has experience in portfolio management, investment strategy and fiduciary oversight, including work with institutional and trust clients. Marco has 20 years of experience providing banking, trust and investment advisory services, according to the firm.

Alaris Names M&A Vet Leonard Head of Business Development

Alaris Acquisitions, a Charlotte, N.C.-based sell-side mergers and acquisitions advisory firm serving the wealth management industry, has named M&A veteran Tony Leonard to the role of managing director of business development.

In the position, Leonard will lead growth and new initiatives for the firm as it works with registered investment advisor owners across the country, according to Alaris. Leonard has been working for almost three decades in the retirement and wealth advisory space, with expertise in M&A, sell-side advisory, diligence, consulting and direct investing.

He is leaving a role at MidCap Advisors, where he advised retirement and wealth advisory firms on strategic transactions. Before that, he was a managing director at Wise Rhino Group, and has worked with SEI Investments, Putnam Investments, New York Life Investment Management and OneAmerica Retirement Services.

“His deep industry relationships, command of RIA market dynamics and proven ability to connect with firm owners make him the ideal partner for our growth ambitions,” Alaris founder and CEO Allen Darby said in a statement.

Over the past year, Alaris worked on about 60 transactions, including partnerships between Modern Wealth Management and Brown and Company, The Family Firm and Beacon Pointe, and Aveo Capital and Carson Group.

Mercer Hires McKinsey’s Zhao as Corporate Development Lead

Mercer Global Advisors, the Denver-based RIA aggregator with $98 billion in AUM, has named former McKinsey & Company wealth management specialist Jimmy Zhao to the role of chief corporate development officer.

Zhao will lead Mercer’s continued expansion through advisor recruiting and acquisition, as well as client generation. He will also be part of Mercer’s executive leadership team and report to Mercer CEO Dave Welling.

The position is a new one for the firm, and will oversee Mercer’s RIA M&A partner development team, which includes executive managing partners Martine Lellis and Ted Motheral, reporting to Zhao.

Last year, that development team had its most robust year of inorganic growth, penning 18 deals for wealth advisory and tax firms. While those two areas will remain central to Mercer’s expansion strategy, Zhao will also consider “additional growth opportunities and partnerships,” according to the announcement.

Zhao had been with McKinsey for over a decade, where he became a well-known figure in the RIA space for his consulting on M&A deals and private capital investments, as well as for his research projects. Last year, he was one of the authors of a widely cited McKinsey report forecasting a shortage of about 100,000 advisors by 2034.

“Jimmy’s experience advising and working with RIAs, asset managers and private equity sponsors on large-scale transactions and growth transformations will be instrumental as we continue to scale our impact and expand our partnership model,” CEO Welling said in a statement.

$500M Lansing Street Adds Four to Management Team

Lansing Street Advisors, an Ambler, Pa.-based RIA with over $500 million in assets under management, added four members to its management team, further professionalizing its practice.

Mike Horwath, formerly of Diversified, will be chief investment officer; Megan Haller Keenan, who had been with RBC Wealth Management, was named chief operating officer; Steve Topley, who had worked as an auditor for Ernst & Young, is chief financial officer, and Patrick Greenhalgh, also from RBC Wealth, will be the RIA's investment advisor representative.

“We have put a senior team in place to lead the industry in generational wealth planning, tax planning and business exit planning,” Matt Topley, founder and principal of Lansing Street Advisors, said in a statement.

"Alaris was amazing! Not only did they help me find the right fit (or firm?), but they made the transition much smoother than it would've been on my own. And I believe the overall outcome was much better than it would've been without them."
